בְּעָלְמָא דִּי בְרָא כִרְעוּתֵהּ וְיַמְלִיךְ מַלְכוּתֵהּ,	in the world whose creation God willed. May God’s kingdom be fulfilled
בְּחַיֵּיכוֹן וּבְיוֹמֵיכוֹן וּבְחַיֵּי דְכׇל בֵּית יִשְׂרָאֵל, בַּעֲגָלָא וּבִזְמַן קָרִיב. וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן׃	in your life and in your days and in the life of the whole House of Israel, soon, and near in time, and say, Amen!
יְהֵא שְׁמֵהּ רַבָּא מְבָרַךְ לְעָלַם וּלְעָלְמֵי עָלְמַיָּא׃	May God’s great name be praised forever, and ever and ever!
יִתְבָּרַךְ, וְיִשְׁתַּבַּח, וְיִתְפָּאֵר, וְיִתְרוֹמֵם, וְיִתְנַשּׂא,	May it be praised and may it be blessed and may it be glorified and may it be upraised and may it be elevated,
וְיִתְהַדָּר, וְיִתְעַלֶּה, וְיִתְהַלָּל,	may it be honored and may it be exalted and may it be extolled,
שְׁמֵהּ דְקֻדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא.	the name of the Holy One – praised be God!
לְעֵלָּא מִן כׇּל בִּרְכָתָא וְשִׁירָתָא, תֻּשְׁבְּחָתָא וְנֶחֱמָתָא, דַּאֲמִירָן בְּעָלְמָא, וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן׃	beyond all words-of-praise, words-of-song, words-of-blessing, and words-of-comfort that are uttered in this world, and say, Amen!
יְהֵא שְׁלָמָה רַבָּא מִן שְׁמַיָּא וְחַיִּים עָלֵינוּ וְעַל כׇּל יִשְֹרָאֵל, וְאִמְרוּ אָמֵן׃	May there be abundant peace from Heaven and life for us and for all Israel, and say, Amen!

This is Dr. Everett Fox’s English translation of the Mourner’s Ḳaddish, “in the spirit of Franz Rosenzweig.” This translation was previously published in Saying Kaddish: How to Comfort the Dying, Bury the Dead, and Mourn as a Jew by Anita Diamant (2007), p. 202-203. (Franz Rosenzweig did make several translations of Jewish liturgy including a German translation of the Kaddish d’Rabbanan, “Das Lernkaddisch,” which was published in 1921.) I have set Dr. Fox’s translation side-by-side with the Aramaic text of the Ḳaddish Yatōm. –Aharon Varady

Everett Fox

Everett Fox is a scholar and translator of the Hebrew Bible. A graduate of Brandeis University, he is currently the Allen M. Glick Professor of Judaic and Biblical Studies and director of the program in Jewish Studies at Clark University. Fox is perhaps best known for his translation into English of the Torah. His translation is heavily influenced by the principles of Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig. Buber in 1962 completed their translation of the Hebrew Bible into German. Fox co-translated their Scripture and Translation into English with Lawrence Rosenwald of Wellesley College (Weissbort and Eysteinsson 562). The main guiding principle of Fox's work is that the aural aspects of the Hebrew text should be translated as closely as possible. Instances of Hebrew word play, puns, word repetition, alliteration, and other literary devices of sound are echoed in English and, as with Buber-Rosenzweig, the text is printed in linear, not paragraph, fashion.
